What customers really want
Service is how people feel when they leave
Customers rarely remember exactly what they bought. They remember how they were treated. Great service is often the reason someone comes back — and poor service is a common reason people don't.
The four things most customers want
| Customers want… | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| To feel welcome | A greeting, a smile and eye contact — even when you're busy |
| To be helped quickly | Not being ignored; a quick "I'll be right with you" if you can't help straight away |
| To get it right | The correct order, the correct change, honest answers |
| To be treated with respect | Patience, politeness and no judgement — whoever they are |
Why it matters to the business — and to you
- Happy customers come back and tell their friends
- Online reviews often mention staff by name — good and bad
- Staff who give great service get more shifts, better references and promotions
Great service vs average service
| Average | Great |
|---|---|
| "Next." | "Hi there! What can I get for you today?" |
| Points: "It's in aisle 6." | Walks them there: "Follow me, I'll show you." |
| "We don't have that." | "We're out of that, but this one's similar — or I can check when more arrives." |
| Hands over the bag in silence | "Here you go — have a great afternoon!" |
Action step
Next time you're a customer somewhere, notice the service. Write down one thing a staff member did that made you feel welcome — and one thing that could have been better.
