The tools every developer uses every day

Almost every software team in the world uses Git to save versions of their code and GitHub to share it and work together. Job ads for developers, testers and data roles often ask for it — and a GitHub profile full of your projects is one of the best ways to show employers what you can do.

What you'll learn

  • What Git and GitHub are, and how to set up a safe, professional account
  • Save your work with commits, see what changed, and undo mistakes
  • Push your work to GitHub and pull changes back
  • Try ideas safely on branches, and fix merge conflicts without panic
  • Work with others using pull requests and issues
  • Publish your own portfolio website for free with GitHub Pages

What you'll produce

A personal portfolio website, built step by step with Git, live on the internet at yourname.github.io — plus a GitHub profile ready to show employers.

Before you start

You'll need a laptop or desktop (Windows, Mac or Linux) and an email address. No coding experience is needed, but some HTML helps — try JavaScript for Beginners or Python Foundations alongside or afterwards. GitHub accounts are for people aged 13 and over.

How it works

  • 6 modules, 17 lessons, about 4 hours plus practice
  • Every Git command in the lessons was really run, and you see its real output — so you know exactly what to expect
  • A portfolio template, a cheat sheet, a quiz after each module and a certificate

Free forever — like every self-paced course on Avro Academy: all lessons, quizzes, downloads and your certificate. Our promise
